DEFINITION:

 

Under general supervision accepts and transmits communications of Police, Fire and Public Works emergency and non-emergency calls, operates radio and recording systems for Police, Fire, Ambulance and Public Works Departments.  Provides data entry and retrieval, and affects the recording of communications.

 

 

SHIFT:

 

Rotating 12-hour shifts, by assignment this position involves regular and irregular shift work necessary to provide services 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 52 weeks/year (weekends and holidays included).  Work shifts are usually 12 hours in duration, but may be extended in the event of emergency.

 

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Receives calls by telephone for emergency Police, Fire and Public Works assistance

  • Dispatches appropriate Police, Fire & Public Works units

  • Relays communication to appropriate agencies

  • Conducts data entry, retrieval and audit functions

  • Monitors alarms, voice & data communication systems

  • Coordinates emergency services with outside agencies

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Successful completion of standardized testing

  • Ability to operate the following equipment: multiple-line telephone systems, multiple computer terminals and monitors, knowledge of voice recording devices, knowledge of alarm system software, radio communications systems, etc.

  • Ability to obtain LEADS Certification

  • Ability to function effectively under stress           

  • Prior experience as a Telecommunications Operator preferred

  • Experience with Printrak CAD is preferred and Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) license a plus
