The Village of Beecher, Illinois (population 4,360), is seeking candidates for the position of Chief of Police. Beecher is a rural suburb located 40 miles south of Chicago in rapidly-growing Will County. The Beecher Police Department currently consists of 7 full-time officers, 7 part-time officers and one full-time Administrative Assistant. The Emergency Management Agency, consisting of six volunteers, also reports to the Chief of Police.

The Village is seeking an experienced professional with demonstrated managerial, interpersonal and customer service skills who will plan, coordinate, supervise, direct, control and evaluate police department operations. Successful candidates must have an outgoing personality and interact with residents, business and community leaders. The Chief of Police must also be an engaged leader of the Police Department, with a genuine desire to interact with employees at all levels of the organization.

 

The Chief of Police must be fair, transparent and consistent in his or her administration and be willing to address issues in a positive and timely manner. The Chief of Police must be proficient in writing and public speaking and have the utmost integrity and character. Responsibilities include budgeting, labor negotiations, purchasing, hiring, promotion, and providing timely information to the Village Board on a monthly and annual basis as required by the Beecher municipal code. The Chief of Police is appointed by the Village President under the general supervision of the Board of Trustees and under the direct supervision of the Village Administrator. The Village’s management philosophy is a team-oriented approach to problem solving that emphasizes customer service and communication.

 

 

Qualifications for the position include:

  1. Graduation from a college or university with a bachelor's degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, including but limited to the FBI Academy, Northwestern University Staff and Command, or other related training

  2. Seven (7) years of experience in police work, three years of which must have been equivalent to the rank of police sergeant or higher, and

  3. Completion of the basic law enforcement training academy or equivalent

Current salary is $86,737 with excellent benefits

 

 

As a condition of employment, successful candidates may be required to pass a thorough background investigation, psychological and polygraph testing, a physical exam, and assessment center process, residency within a 15 mile radius may be required within a year.
