POLICE OFFICER Lateral and Academy Graduate
Salary: $3,990 - $4,399 3% increase effective July 1, 2005
Hiring Bonus: $500.00 Intermediate Post Certificate 2% above Base Salary; or Advanced Post Certificate 3% above Base Salary
The City of Cotati is currently recruiting Police Officers. We are currently recruiting to attract Lateral and Academy Graduates for open positions within our agency.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS · PERS Contribution: City currently pays the full 9% of the employee contribution to PERS · Medical/Dental/Vision: Paid by City for employee and dependents · Retirement: PERS 3% at 50 · Assignments/Specialty Pay: 5% for Field Training Officer and Detective. K9 is equivalent to 5% · Uniform Allowance: $700 per year · Schedule: 4/10 · Other Opportunities: Community Policing, Bicycle Patrol, and Traffic Enforcement · Leave Bank: 50 Hour Leave bank inclusive of sick leave plus monthly leave based on years of service: One to three years 8 hours per month Three to five years 12 hours per month Five to ten years 14 hours per month Ten and more years 18 hours per month · Holiday Pay: Equivalent to 12.5 ten hour days yearly · Life Insurance: The City provides $15,000 per employee · Deferred Compensation: The employee may make contributions into this retirement savings program (IRS 457) · Employee Assistance Program: The City offers employee assistance through REMIF · Hiring Bonus: Payable on successful completion of 12 months of service · Intermediate Post Certificate: 2% above base salary · Advanced Post Certificate: 3% above base salary · Cafeteria Plan (IRS 125): Un-reimbursed medical, dependent daycare, and other supplemental pre-tax & post-tax policies · Longevity Plan: 5% of base salary after 10 years of service with satisfactory performance evaluations · Moving Expenses: Maximum reimbursement of $2,000 for moving and initial rent expenses to within 30 minutes of the City of Cotati. LATERALS:
If you are currently employed as a California Peace Officer with one year of experience, or if you have been employed within the past 12 months with a minimum of one year of experience, and you possess or are eligible to possess a California POST Basic Certificate issued by the Commission on Peace officer Standards and Training you qualify as a Lateral Candidate. Lateral Police Officers may be appointed up to the fifth step in the salary range commensurate with experience, education, training, and POST certificates.
ACADEMY ATTENDEES & GRADUATES:
Academy graduates are applicants who are currently enrolled in or have successfully completed, within the last two years, a California POST approved basic academy. Certification of successful completion of a Re-qualification course issued by California POST within the last two years is also qualifying for Academy Graduate Status. For current Academy attendees, you must be in the final phase of a POST academy at the time of application. Candidates who have completed the police academy within one year prior to being hired and who have not been employed by another agency as a police officer are eligible to be reimbursed for out of pocket academy tuition and related costs up to $1,000.
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Under general supervision, works various shifts
patrolling an assigned area in the prevention of crime and enforcement of law
and order; enforces state and local traffic regulations; investigates
complaints; performs special assignments in the protection of life and property;
and, performs related duties as required.
Knowledge of police methods and procedures
including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation and
identification techniques; criminal law and criminal procedure with reference to
the apprehension, arrest and custody of persons committing misdemeanors and
felonies, including rules of evidence regarding seizure and preservation of
evidence; offensive and defensive weapons use and theory; first aid principles,
practices and techniques; self defense tactics; and interviewing and
interrogation techniques.
Must be able to perform essential job functions,
with or without reasonable accommodation, which include but are not limited to:
Ability to observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and
places; use and properly care for firearms; understand, interpret and apply
laws, regulations, policies and procedures; prepare clear, accurate and
grammatically correct written reports; analyze situations quickly and
objectively to determine and take emergency action; identify potential crime
situation or traffic hazards and take preventive action; meet the first aid
requirement as prescribed by the State and to administer first aid; learn the
operation of standard equipment and facilities required in the performance of
assigned tasks; meet the physical requirements established by the department;
communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and, establish
and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the
course of work. Ability to comprehend and utilize various types of computers
and computer software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Be a U.S. Citizen who is a minimum of 21 years
of age and possess an appropriate, valid California drivers license by time of
appointment. Any combination of experience and training that would likely
provide the required knowledge and abilities including, but not limited to,
graduation from a police academy and possession of a POST Certificate of
Completion; and, equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented
by college course work in criminal justice or a related field.
PART I
All completed applications will be reviewed by a
screening committee. For Lateral and
Graduate Academy applicants, a copy of your POST
Police Academy Certificate must be included with your application. Applications
received without a copy of your POST Police Academy Certificate will be
considered incomplete and will not be considered further in the process.
For current Academy Attendees, you must be in the final phase of a
POST
Academy at time of application.
PART II
Successful candidates from the screening will be
invited to an appraisal interview. The appraisal interview is designed to
evaluate training, experience, and other job-related information.
PART III
Final selection of the candidate for the open
position will depend upon successfully passing city-sponsored polygraph,
physical and psychological examinations and a background investigation. All
other candidates that successfully pass all phases of the selection process will
be placed on an eligibility list that will be effective for one year from the
date of the list.
