Recruitment Program


The Dover Police Department is one of six agencies authorized to hold police academies in the State of Delaware. Training consists of a multi-phase program that begins with the Police Training Academy session of approximately 6 months, followed by an 10-week Field Training Officer program. After the completion of a 2-year probationary period, officers are eligible for movement into specialized areas based on supervisor recommendations and specialized training. The Dover Police Department continuously provides professional law enforcement training and re-certification to its own officers as well as to officers from surrounding agencies.


Minimum Requirements (Officers)

  • United States Citizen
  • 21 years of age upon completion of Police Academy, and must not exceed 36 years by date of entering the Academy. Delaware certified officers who exceed 36 years of age at time application is filed with the Dover Police, and who are members of the Delaware County/Municipal pension plan who can complete 20 years of credited service by age 55 under the pension plan, may be approved for employment (Dover Police participates in the above named pension plan).
  • Provide Proof of High School Graduation or G.E.D.
    (The Dover Police Department does not require college but college education is preferred).
  • Good reputation and character.
  • No criminal conviction record without proof of pardon or expungement.
  • Possess a valid Delaware drivers license at time of appointment.
  • Must have a good driving record.
  • Minimum eyesight acuity 20/200 correctable to 20/20 in each eye with soft contact lenses. Must be able to distinguish between the colors of Red/Green/Amber. Applicants shall have no pathology of the eyes.

Pay & Benefits

Currently, Police Officer Recruits start at a salary of $37,041.  After successful completion of the Police Academy and 1 year of service, salary increases to $38,153
