The Police Department is a public service
organization. The job of Patrol Officer involves responsibility for enforcement
of laws and ordinances, prevention and detection of crime, and guarding the
general welfare of the citizens of the City and its visitors. A Patrol Officer
maintains law and order by patrolling the City in a radio-equipped car, or on
foot, as assigned by the shift supervisor. The Police Department also has a
voluntary bicycle patrol. The job of Patrol Officer involves a certain amount
of danger. After training, a Patrol Officer is expected to make independent
decisions in emergency situations and while under pressure. Specific
instructions and assistance are given a Patrol Officer by a superior officer
when needed. The work of the Patrol Officer is continually reviewed by
supervisors. The job offers an opportunity for a career in a vital public
service occupation. The work is seldom routine and offers great challenge. All
members participate in a continuing in-service training program and are provided
opportunities to attend basic and advanced law enforcement schools. Uncertified
officers must successfully complete a 12 week basic training course at the
Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island, Nebraska. City of Scottsbluff is an Equal Opportunity Employer
