San Diego is the nation’s 7th largest city, and the second largest in California, with a diverse population and a land area including 17 miles of coastline.
Position reports to the City Manager and currently oversees 2,104 sworn positions, 681 civilian positions, 840 volunteers and a FY 2003 budget of $277 million.
The Department has 8 operational divisions: three Neighborhood Policing Areas, Operational Support, Administrative Services, Special Services, Policy and Planning, and Neighborhood Code Compliance.
Requires equivalent of: a relevant bachelor’s degree and significant experience as a Chief or equivalent command level in a comparable metropolitan Police or Sheriff’s Department of similar complexity, size and budget, as well as P.O.S.T. management or executive level certification. A master’s degree is desirable.
