The Maryland Police Corps is a program funded by the U.S.
Department of Justice designed to help local law enforcement
agencies increase the number of police officers with advanced
education. Officers hired under this program agree to work in
community policing/patrol assignments for a period of four (4) years
after hire by participating police agencies.
Applicants must meet separate selection requirements for both the Prince
George's County Police Department and the Maryland Police Corps. Selected
applicants do not become employees of the Prince George's County Police
Department until they successfully complete all Maryland Police Corps
requirements, including graduation from the 24-week residential training program
and receive a Final Offer of Employment from the Prince George's County Police
Department. Police Corps graduates must also complete a 5-week Prince
George's County Police Academy and 16 weeks of Field Training.
Police Corps graduates are eligible for reimbursement of up to $30,000 for prior
college expenses. Police Corps Trainees receive a $250 per week stipend in
lieu of a salary during the 24-week residential (live-in) training program
located in Linthicum, Maryland. As a Police Corps Cadet, you will receive
room and board, all equipment, uniforms, training, and health benefits. Upon
graduation, you will be awarded three (3) graduate credits from the University
of Maryland.
APPLICATION PROCESS:
- Completion of separate Police Corps and Prince George's County Police
Department Applications
- Successful completion of testing and background investigations
- Conditional offer of employment extended from the Prince George's County
Police Department and a approved Police Corps contract authorizing entry
into the program
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- U.S. Citizen
- Recent college graduate (no earlier than 2000) or full-time student pursuing
a four-year degree at an accredited college or university
- 21 years old at time of graduation from the Maryland Police Corps Academy
- Possess a valid driver's license
- Good character, sound judgment, honesty, reliability, integrity and sincere
dedication to public service
THE SELECTION PROCESS: Applicants must successfully complete
all of the following:
- Written Examination
- Physical Agility Test
- Completion and submission of a Personal History Statement
- Audio/Vision Screening
- Polygraph Examination
- Oral Board
- Background Investigation
- Conditional Offer of Employment
- Psychological Screening
- Medical Examinations - complete physical (weight should be in proportion to
height)
- Final Offer of Employment
- Graduation from 24- week residential (live-in) Police Corps training
program located in Linthicum, Maryland
- Completion of 5-week Prince George's County Academy and 16-week Field
Training Program
Reasons for disqualification may include (but are not limited to) the
following: poor work history; poor driving record; felony conviction; illegal
drug usage, possession, distribution, sale or purchase; falsification of
application or other documents; failure to meet physical standards; inability to
competitively complete any of the component parts of the selection process;
and/or any other disqualifying factor as determined by the Police Department, or
the Maryland Police Corps during the required training.
ELIGIBILITY TO WORK: Under the Immigration Reform and Control
Act of 1986, an employer is required to hire only U.S. citizens and lawfully
authorized alien workers. Applicants who are selected for employment will be
required to show and verify authorization to work in the United States.
