Under the administrative direction of the City Manager, the Police Chief is responsible for the administration, planning and coordination of all Police Department, Animal Control, 911 Emergency Dispatch, and School Resource Officer programs. The new Police Chief will be responsible for a staff of seventy-eight, fifty-five of which are sworn officers and an annual budget of 5.9 million. Involved in the formulation and adoption of policies, procedures and regulations for the Department; making decisions pertaining to emergency policy procedures. Ensures appropriate information is provided to the City Council and City Management, community and the news media regarding major crimes, incidents and advises and assists subordinates in high complex criminal or other ongoing investigations.
The ideal candidate is outcome based with strong leadership skills who is innovative, participatory, action and results oriented; excellent interpersonal skills, who cares about people, can create a motivating environment for staff, team builder/player, and has a leadership style that recognizes and praises team successes. A "hands on" leader and manager who willingly responds to field incidents, takes part in community events, and will be comfortable taking an active role in the community. strong training and mentoring skills with a good knowledge of patrol services, traffic services, investigative services and special operations.
Education & Experience should be graduation from high school supplemented by considerable college level course work in related fields. Must have current or previous experience in police administration with a Law Enforcement Agency at a command level and an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid Arizona driver's license without record of suspension or revocations in any state. Must be able to meet department's physical standards and have basic law enforcement training certification or equivalent. Experience using assigned equipment including police car, police radio, handgun and other weapons as required.
