Applicant Requirements

 

U.S. Citizen between the ages of 21 and 35. Applicants 36 years of age or older may take the exam only if he or she has at least five years prior experience as a peace officer or five years of military experience. Persons 45 years of age or older are not eligible for a beginning position as a police officer.

 

Applicants must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. with 60 accredited college credit hours

Or

 

Four years military experience with 30 accredited college hours

 

Or

 

At least two years of full-time employment with a federal, state, county, or municipal law enforcement agency and a current peace officer’s license.

 

Applicants vision must be at least 20/100 unaided, corrected to 20/20. Applicants who have a restriction on their drivers license for glasses or contacts for any reason must submit a recent eye exam or statement from a physician indicating the aided and unaided vision before the application will be processed. Applicants must have no color blindness, at least 15/15 hearing, and a blood pressure of 140/90 or better.

 

Applicants with felony convictions will not be considered for employment.

 

Applicants cannot be on probation for any offense on the date of the civil service test.

 

Applicants must possess a valid Texas driver’s license and have no more than two events (moving violations or accidents) in the 24 months preceding the date of application.

 

Out of state applicants may apply, but must obtain a Texas driver’s license upon employment with the city.

 

Applicants cannot have a DWI/DUI within 120 months preceding the date of application.

 

No applicant may be certified as eligible for appointment to the position of police officer whose drug usage does not comply with those standards set by the City of Grand Prairie Civil Service Commission.
