LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Dear Reader, A matter of degrees How important is a college education in your pursuit of a career in law enforcement? More and more departments are requiring some college credit, an Associates or even a Bachelors degree as part of their entry level requirements. The trend that really picked up momentum a few years ago when departments were rich with applicants, slowed significantly with the “full employment” this country enjoyed until recently. With the tech bubble burst and the increasing number of police applicants in recent months I would expect an increasing number of departments to consider increasing their entry level requirements, and that likely means that the need for college will be on the rise. Even if you begin your career with an agency that does not require college, you may want to finish your degree while on the job. The competition for promotion will very likely be made up of a good number of college graduates, and being one of them sure helps. Not to mention the fact that many departments without an entry level requirement may not consider you for promotion without a degree. The good news is that getting your degree has never been easier. There is a growing number of colleges and universities that cater to the adult learner with accelerated schedules that are well suited to a full-time work schedule. There are also an increasing number of college programs that are either supplemented by on-line coursework or degree programs that are completely on-line and require little or no classroom time. If you are looking for a good selection of on-line and campus centered criminal justice and law enforcement programs you can find it at www.theblueline.com. Look for the red “Get Your Degree” banner in the upper right corner to link you to our college page. There you will find a selection of programs to get you started, or help you finish, your degree. There is no time like the present. What are you waiting for? Thank you and best wishes, Kevin Woodside, Publisher 2.
